Who
Craft, Curiosity, and Code
My first computer was a Texas Instruments TI-99, which used a cassette tape as a hard drive. Later came my closer companion, the Apple IIe – I still have it, along with floppy disks full of programs I wrote in BASIC. One of them, a Dungeons & Dragons character generator, is hundreds of lines long… and still runs.
When I got my first modem, I could only dial into one computer at a time – a Bulletin Board System. Then came the internet.
When the web took off, I was working the night shift as a network admin at NewsCom, a company later acquired by the Los Angeles Times. I was the entire night staff, alone in a historic building in downtown L.A. After hours, in that quiet and eerie space, I started teaching myself how to build websites.
I’m Joe Wein. I launched this company in the late ‘90s, starting with small sites for local businesses. One of my early projects was designing a site for a sailboat competing in the America’s Cup. That led to work with 20th Century Fox, where I built websites for many of their Home Entertainment releases – and later, the Fox Store, selling studio merchandise.
As a designer, one of my biggest inspirations was Hillman Curtis. He was a phenomenal web designer whose books and work I studied closely. He was based in Brooklyn. I never got to meet him, but he left a lasting impact on my creative approach.
Today, I continue to collaborate with incredible designers and developers, creating digital experiences for companies of all sizes. I’ve led social media campaigns for films like The Missing Link, Trolls, Rambo: Last Blood, Hellboy, Dumbo, Ma, The Hate U Give, and many more.
I recently completed the redesign of Worthe.com – a company that owns over 7 million square feet of premium commercial real estate in Los Angeles, including the soon-to-launch Gehry-designed tower at Burbank Studios. I also created a new website for Live Nation, further expanding the range of projects I’ve had the chance to work on.
I also have a love of filmmaking, which you can learn more about at joewein.com.
